Golfgate Prevents O'Rourke's Radio Return

Broadcaster Sean O'Rourke was due to return to RTÉ Radio following his retirement. O'Rourke attended the Oireachtas Golf Dinner last week, the Dinner was attended by over 80 people and has cause the resignation of a number of high profiled politicians. O'Rourke was one of RTÉ's top current affair broadcasters earning 309,000 euro at the Irish National Public Service Broadcaster in 2016.


The former host of RTÉ Radio's Today programme was due be part of a major shake up of the RTÉ Radio 1 schedule according to some news reports. RTÉ is due to launch it new season this Wednesday (26th of August, 2020) at which Sean O'Rourke was undoubtedly going to make a surprise return following his retirement from the broadcaster in May 2020.

However, Today (Monday, 24th of August 2020) RTÉ made the announcement that after a meeting today it was decided that O'Rourke would not be part of any future projects with RTÉ

Sean O’Rourke said I spent many years with RTÉ presenting programmes on which public figures were called to account for their actions. Now I must call myself to account. The right course is to set aside our plans for my return to the airwaves.”

Meanwhile the Golf dinner continues to make political waves as the President of the EU Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, is to review information pertaining to Phil Hogan's attendance at the Dinner. Mr Hogan is currently President von der Leyen's Trade Commissioner.
