A total of 168,070 COVID-19 cases were detected across the Island of Ireland in 2020. The Republic of Ireland recorded 93,552 cases for 2020, while in Northern Ireland 74,518 cases were detected in 2020. The 31st of December saw an increase of 3,458 COVID-19 cases. The HSE and the Department of health announced 1,774 tonight. In Northern Ireland 1,684 cases were detected.
The Republic of Ireland saw a 92% increase in COVID-19 cases in December, while Northern Ireland saw a 58% increase.

31st December Figures
Republic of Ireland
The headline figures show a total of 1,774 new cases as of 12 midnight on the 31st of December, with 11 deaths reported. Overall 2,248 COVID related deaths have been announced.
The HSE and Department of Health announced full hospital figures for December 30th. The total number admitted to hospital stands at 6,038 cases, up 51 from the day before.
A total of 17 health care workers were reported to have been infected. A total of 13,353 health care workers have contracted COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic.
