Consumer Price Index Sees Rise in Prices

A rise of 2.2% in consumer prices for the year to date has been calculated by the CSO (Central Statistics Office). This is a 1% increase for the month of march. In March 2011 a price rise of 0.9% was recorded.

On average prices differed by 2.2% in March 2012 and March 2011. Transport saw the biggest gain with a 4% increase, Clothing & Footwear saw a 2.7% increase, miscellaneous Goods & Service increased by 1.7%

The big increases for the year included a 9.4% increase in Education Cost, 7.6% increase in Transport, Alcohol and Tobacco increased by 3.9% and Miscellaneous goods saw a yearly increase of 3.7%.

Decreases for the year were seen in Furnishings, Household Equipment & Routine Household Maintenance (e.g. Cleaning and DIY products) down 2.1%, Recreation & Culture down 0.7% and Clothing down 0.7%.

The annual rate of inflation for Services was 3.3% in the year to March, while Goods increased by 1.0%.
