May Sees 2% Decrease in COVID-19 Cases

The HSE and the Department of health announced 13,002 cases in May. In Northern Ireland 2,456 cases were reported. In total there have been 385,190 COVID cases since the pandemic began in 2020. May saw a 2% drop in the number of report COVID-19 across Ireland. Northern Ireland saw the biggest decrease of 15%, while the republic saw a slight increase in cases of 1% for the month.

Republic of Ireland

The headline figures show a total of 337 new cases as of 12 midnight on the 31st of May. Overall 4,937 COVID related deaths have been announced, the number of deaths caused by COVID-19 was stopped following the HSEs cyber attack, figures are only up to May 11th, 2021.

The HSE have suspended the covid 19 information website due to security breach.

May saw a marginal increase in cases of 1% from April. 13,022 people were detected to have COVID compared to 12,837 in April. In total 25 covid related deaths were reported, this compares to April's figure of 86, however figures in May from 12th to the 31st have yet to be announced.

Northern Ireland

The Northern Irish Health Department announced 34 cases on the 31st of May. They reported no COVID related deaths, 2,153 have died in the north since the pandemic began.

Since May 27th no person has been admitted to hospital with COVID-19. The total numbers admitted to hospital since the pandemic began is 9,432.

May saw a 15% drop in cases from April, 2,456 people were detected to have COVID. In total 8 COVID related deaths were reported, this compares to April's figure of 30. 65 people were admitted to hospital a drop of 98 from April.
