Sky have announced that they are to retire their flagship TV channel Sky ONE. It will be renamed Sky Showcase, the new format for the channel will highlight the top programmes from the broadcaster. They have also announced that Sky Replay (formerly Sky TWO) will be replaced by Sky Max the new home for Sky\'s blockbuster entertainment shows, while they will update Sky Comedy to be the home of Sky Original Comedy.
RTÉ2\'s timeshift service RTÉ2+1 is to start airing on Sky from Wednesday (10th March, 2021). The channel has been available on Saorview for the last 2 years, launching on the 19th of February, 2019. The channel airs RTÉ2\'s programming an hour later from the main channel. It\'s current audience share is 0.22%, while RTÉ2\'s audience share in January 2021 was just 3.88%. The channel will be placed on channel 202 on the Sky TV guide, while it is currently available on Saorview\'s Channel 12. Last month TG4 launched it plus 1 and plus 2 services online.
Sky News is to set up a new Sky News Bureau in Dublin. Darren McCaffrey from Co. Fermanagh, and currently Sky's Political Correspondent, will take on the role of Dublin Correspondent. Sky state that this is to show their commitment to Irish Viewers. Darren will be joined by a dedicated crew to cover Irish breaking news stories as they unfold.
IFTA announced their 23 categories and the nominations for each category. Comedy and Soap have been merged for a number of the categories due possibly to the low number of dramas produced by the industry, however both comedy and soap are given their own categories with Fair City facing off against newcomer Red Rock, though IFTA failed to give a nod to Ros Na Run, which failed to make the cut at this year’s awards. Irish Pictorial Weekly, Moone Boy, Mrs Browns Boys and The Savage Eye are all up for best comedy, with Damo and Ivor getting a nomination the acting categories
When it won the rights to air the Rugby World Cup TV3 announced that it would launch TV3HD. As expect TV3HD will not launch on Saorview. TV3HD will be available only on pay TV platforms Sky and UPC. TV3HD will launch in August 2015 with the arrival of the RWC from England on the 18th of September 2015. This will mark the first time that TV3 have hosted a full interational event, previous it co-hosted the 2007 RWC with Setanta Sports.
TV3 has signed a contract with the BAI to extend its licence for its time shift channel, TV3 +1. TV3 original signed an extension to its Public Service Contract with the BAI in December to allow it to broadcast TV3 +1 on cable services. On December 2nd, 2014, TV3+1 began broadcasting on the UPC cable network, the BAI and TV3 signed an extension to the TV3 contract on December 22nd, 2014. On February 24th, 2015 the BAI and TV3 signed an extension to the contract to included satellite and digital terrestrial television.
