CIT Student Wins International Violin Award

Mairéad Hickey (16) was the winner of the 19th Jeunesses International Violin Competition, Bucharest, Romania, on Thursday 17 May 2012. Mairéad has been a violin student of Adrian Petcu at CIT Cork School of Music since 2003.

The competition hosts 138 competitors and 38 countries. The competition is divided into three age categories. 32 competitors took part in the 14 to 18 year old category, the category was won by Irish student Mairéad Hickey, who played music by Bach and Paganini in the first round of the competition and music by Sarasate, Massenet and Tchaikovsky in the Final.

Jury members came from China, France, Germany, Ireland and Romania. Mairéad performed Sarasate’s Gypsy Airs in the Gala Final Concert in Bucharest’s Odéon Theatre on Saturday 19 May, 2012.

Boschkor Lara from Germany came first in Under 14s category , while Park Sujin from Australia came first in the adult category.
