Top Irish TV Rating 2017
RTÉ continued to dominated the top most viewed programmes. Both RTÉ ONE and 2 saw entries into the the top twenty shows with no showings for TV3, eir Sport or TG4. Overall RTÉ was down 2% in 2017, TV3 was up 2% from last year and TG4 was up 5% and eirSport was down 63% from last year, largely due to its exit from Virgin Media's platform.
The year for Irish TV pretty much saw the Irish broadcasters hold their own. Holding just 44.66% of the audience share. Irish broadcaster were slightly down from last year when they had 45.06% of the audience share. A very fragmented audience was seen for London based channels giving them nearly 56% of the total share in 2017 up from 55% last year.
The big change for Irish broadcasters was the takeover of UTV Ireland by TV3, which saw the channel become part of TV3's suite of channels, renamed be3 in January the channel lost 61% of UTV Ireland Audience down from 5.87% to 2.31%, but this was due to the move of the ITV soaps back to TV3.
As you can imagine TV3 increased its audience share by 41%, going from an average of just 7.66% in 2016 to 10.83% in 2017. The new combination of channels from TV3 saw its sister channel also increase its audience, 3e saw an increase from 2.47% to 3% in 2017. Overall TV3 and its suite of channels achieved a share of 16.65%, a 2% increase from 2016 (including UTV Ireland's share).
RTÉ largely held its own in 2017. Taking all of the top twenty shows RTÉ was able to achieve an overall share of 26.03% in 2017 a drop of 2%. RTÉ ONE saw a small drop to 18.39% from 18.67%. RTÉ2 had 6.11% share of the audience in 2017 a drop of 4% from 2016. RTÉjr had an audience of 0.72%.
Both +1 services from RTÉ ONE and TV3 saw significant increase in audience with RTÉ ONE+1 achieving 0.82% (up 6%) and TV3 +1 gaining 36% to 0.51%.
TG4 saw its audience increase by 5% to 1.87%, eirSport on the other hand continued to see the effects of being dropped by Virgin Media giving them a share of just 0.11% for 2017.
