Green Party Irish Language Spokesperson Resigns from Party

The Green Party's spokesperson on The Irish Language and Gealteach Affairs (Urlabhraí na Gaeilge & Gnóthaí Gaeltachta) has resigned from the Party. Peter Kavanagh was elected to South Dublin County Council in the 2019 local election in the Clondalkin Local Election Area.


Councillor Kavanagh said this evening that he'd "taken the very difficult decision to step down as Urlabhraí na Gaeilge & Gnóthaí Gaeltachta and resign from the Green Party/Comhaontas Glass".

He was apposed to the Programme for Government and spoke against it at the Green Party Special Convention which allowed The Green Party enter government with Fianna Fail and Fine Gael.

He has since voiced his continued opposition to the Government which he says has "been met with a culture I cannot reconcile with the value of the Green Party/Comhaontas Glas".

The Green Party won 49 seats in the 2019 local elections, since there decision to enter government last year they have lost 5 of those seats.
