The Minister stated that “this project demonstrates TG4’s ability to keep pace with broadcast and content Technology Developments at a time of exponential change.”

The new project will put TG4 in a competitive position to maximise its content across all platforms, with full HD (High Definition) at each stage of production. It will also allow TG4 to adapt to any new transmission or distribution standards that arise in the future.

It is hoped that the creation of new and innovative Irish language learning apps will help the Government's 20-Year Irish Language Strategy.

In 2011 DCENR provided €2.7million in capital funding for TG4 HD, the service has yet to be launched on Saorview (Ireland's free-to-air digital terrestrial platform along with other pubcasters RTÉ ONE HD and RTÉ TWO HD). TG4 HD is available on cable platform UPC.
