Congo: an Irish Affair wins Michael Dwyer Award

The Michael Dwyer Award for 2011 has been presented to Irina Maldea and Brendan Culleton of Akajava films for their film "Congo: an Irish Affair". The film recounts the experiences of Irish Army peacekeepers in the Congo in 1961. Using interviews with survivors and much previously unseen archive footage the film is able to tell fascinating story.

The film was funded by TG4, Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board and the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland and MEDIA.

Last year Ken Wardrop's His and Hers won the award.

The Michael Dwyer Award is awarded to the film which has made the most impact on the Access Cinema circuit in the past year.

Michael Dwyer first set up the Tralee Film Society in the early '70s, later he would go on to set up the Federation of Irish Film Societies. Since 2001 The Federation is known as Access Cinema. Michael Dwyer died in 2010 at the age of 58, the award is name in his memory.
