Oireachtas Petitions

The Houses of the Oireachtas have announced a system of petitioning the Oireachtas by the public. This will be the first time in the 96 year history of the Oireachtas that members of the public will be able to petition Dáil and Seanad members directly. This allows the public to influence the parliamentary agenda. The new petition system was launched in Ballymun's Axis Centre today (13/09/12).

A new joint committee on Public Service Oversight and Petitions will be set up to oversee the petitions.

Committee Cathaoirleach Peadar Tóibín TD says: “‘This is an important innovation in Parliamentary democracy. For the first time in the 93 year history of the Oireachtas citizens will have a direct route to influence the parliamentary agenda.

“Those best qualified to comment on the effectiveness of our public services are its users. Therefore the experiences of our citizens will now be placed at the centre of the development and delivery of effective public services.”

Petitions are available on the Oireachtas Website Here.
