€26.5 Million secured for replacement prefabs scheme

The Minister for Education, Ruairi Quinn, has announced the provision of €26.5 million for the replacement of prefab classrooms with permanent classrooms. This is the second round of approvals from the Department of Education, which aims to replace prefab accommodation with high quality classrooms.

This latest round will provide 91 schools with funding to progress their aim to replace prefab classrooms. The first round provided 77 schools with approval to build new accommodation for their staff and pupils.

The Department is currently considering 12 more schools for the scheme. According to the Minister "Along with the School Building Programme, an estimated 3,250 direct and 650 indirect jobs will be created this year through the Government's investment in education infrastructure."
