Elections in Northern Ireland set for March 2
Following on from the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scandal James Brokenshire (the British Minister with responisbility for Northern Ireland) has called an Election, which is to be held on March 2nd, 2017. The calling of the election was preceded by Sinn Fein's decision not to put forward a nomination for Deputy First Minster at the Northern Ireland Assembly in Stormont.
Sinn Fein and the DUP were put into stalemate following the RHI scandal. In Sinn Fein's view the First Minsiter, Arleen Foster, should have stepped aside while an independent review of the RHI scheme took place.
Arleen Foster and the DUP were adamant that she would not step aside from the position. The First Minster sited misogyny from the parliament, as a reason for the continued attacks. However this line of argument backfired as she had been minister at the department during the RHI scandal and regardless of gender she'd have to answer questions.
The DUP further attacked Sinn Fein with criticism of their past actions during the Northern Irish troubles. This line may work with DUP supports as the six counties enters elections.
Both the Irish and British Governments remain in contact during this process.
