The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland has been unable or unwilling to provided details as to how eir Sport, a Pay TV broadcaster, has gained funding from the regulator aimed at local radio, community broadcasters and free to air TV. The BAI insist that eir meets the requirements of the Broadcasting Act 2009, however they are not able to provide details as to how non-Pay TV subscribers can gain free access to programming produced for eirSport via the publicly funded Licence Fee.

UPC have bought TV3 for €80m. A massive drop from the price paid by Dogherty Hanson in 2006. Equity Portfoilio company Doherty Hanson bought the channel for €265m from then owners Canwest and ITV. This marks a 70% drop in the vaulation of the company in the last 9 years. We mark the sale of TV3 with a review of Irish TV in 2015.

None of the Irish TV broadcasters picked up FIFA's Women's World Cup, which begins in Canada tomorrow (6/6/15). While there is no Irish interest in the tournament with neither Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland qualifying for the games. CCÉ contacted all of the Irish broadcasters about their plans to cover the Women's World Cup all failed to respond to the request for information. The EBU signed an agreement for live broadcast and online coverage for the match for 17 EBU member states including the Republic of Ireland. The new president of the EBU is RTÉ's head of Television, Glen Killane (former Head of Sports with the broadcaster). No arrangement was made by any of the Irish broadcasters to attain the broadcast rights, even placing agreements for coverage with RTÉ or the EBU.

Setanta Sports have announced that they will broadcast Wimbledon for the next 3 years. Wimbledon yet again is lost from Irish Terrestrial TV as TG4 had previously broadcast the tournament since 2005 after a 8 year hiatus from Terrestrial TV when RTÉ decided to drop the tournament in 1998, stating it could not compete with the BBC's loyal Irish Audience. All 26 games will air across the Setanta Ireland and Setanta Sports 1. Setanta retains their rights to the French Open until 2019.

setantaBAI Announced Sound and Vision Funding Round 21

Sound and Vision funding is in its second iteration and the BAI have given out €5.2 million in funding in round 21. The funding comes from the Television Licence Fee. TV3's new soap, Red Rock, has been awarded €800,000 for 18 percent of its production costs consisting of 104 episodes, while new TV channel UTV Ireland has been given funding for a drama called Pilgrimage and a two part documentary series, hinting at its addition to the Saorview platform.

On Tuesday (20/05/2014) the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) announced funding given to producers for the production of TV, Film and Radio through the Sound and Vision Fund. The Sound and Vision Fund comes from the TV licence fee and is diverted from RTÉ to support a range of public service broadcasting across community, local, commercial and national broadcast services.
