Cllr. Eilis Ryan, The Workers Party, has called on the Government to introduce a manadatory scheme of vaccinations for all school-going children to stem whooping cough and measles outbreaks. An outbreak of measles in Dublin has brought this issue to the fore according to Cllr. Ryan. She wants to see all children attending creches, play facilities and schools to be vaccinated.

In late 2016 RTÉjr;announced its decision, to as they put it, outsource children's programming. This caused some uproar about what appeared to be the dropping of Children's programming. It was strange to see that RTɠhad used the word outsource, in TV terms it would usually be put down as comissioning. With the uproar in the media about outsourcing RTɠslightly back tracked on some of the staff they were planning to make redundant and they were clear to say that they were not cutting funding for Children's Programming. According to their 2015 Annual Report just under 10 million was spent on Children's, they 2016 annual report had yet to be produced, in mid-2017 it showed that RT Ehad cut funding for children's programming by 25%.
Virgin Media have struck a deal with Canadian DHX Media for both streaming rights and broadcast rights to 615 hours of kids TV. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs will air on 3kids, be3's dedicated children's programming slot, along with Bob the Builder, Fireman Sam and the Air Bud movies.
Following on from the announcement last year that RTÉ was ditching in-house productions of Children's programming, today (18/07/17) RTÉ announce that they had reduced their spend on programming for children by 25%. RTÉ spent just 7.1million euro on programming for children. This compares to 9.4million in 2015. RTÉ announce that it would outsource children's programming in 2017 but retain its 2016 budget. However RTÉ fail to mention how much that budget came to.
