One Book One City Dubliners

Lord Mayor Andrew Montague will launch this year’s Dublin: One City, One Book programme at the Mansion House, Dawson Street at 10.45am on Wednesday 28th March. James Joyce’s Dubliners is this year’s One City, One Book choice.

“I am delighted that this year Dubliners by James Joyce has been selected as Dublin: One City, One Book 2012. Anyone reading it is in for a real treat and I look forward to the discussions and debates on the characters and the stories. Throughout the month you can enjoy readings, drama, music, talks and exhibitions, many of which are free, all helping to recreate Joyce’s Dublin. It’s a wonderful opportunity for today’s Dubliners to dip into this window on Dublin’s past,” says Lord Mayor Montague.

Dubliners is the perfect title to celebrate Dublin’s status as a UNESCO City of Literature. O’Brien Press has published a special commemorative edition with an introduction by author John Boyne. Copies are available on loan from all Dublin City Public Libraries branches and to buy from all local book shops.

“It’s hard to imagine a more appropriate book for this year’s One City One Book than Dubliners. It’s interested in all of us, rich and poor, old and young, men and women. It’s filled with humour and love, pain and loss, and which of our lives do not contain elements of each of these? Above all, it rings out with a love of these streets, of the voices of the people who inhabit them, their wit, their style, their optimism even as the world collapses around them,” says John Boyne.
